Update on my privacy fence...

by - June 11, 2013

Okay, I'll try and make this DIY as clear as possible...

First, I purchased two IKEA - Sultan Lade Bed Slats...they look like this...
and are usually used to hold up your mattress...
Of course I had other ideas for them...
IKEA - Sultan Lade Bed Slats

Next we purchased three, 8ft, 2x4's from HomeDepot...for $3.88 each

We stained all the wood with this and let it dry over night...

I took these shots just to give you some idea of what I'm actually working with out there...disaster.

I purchased these trees early in the spring...thinking they could add a little privacy to my terrace...FAIL.
I will be returning them to HomeDepot this week...If it ever stops raining...UGH!

So, the 2x4's went up pretty easily with these brackets...

We just screwed them directly into the metal terrace railing...top and bottom railing.

Once they were up...we attached the newly stained bed slats to the 2x4's

and viola...
We thought we were done...but, the opening in the slats turned out to be too far apart...and did not provide enough privacy...

So we had to move each slat up...1.5 inches...manually...UGH!

You can see the difference in the photo below...

The one on the right has the original spacing...the slats on the left are much tighter and offer more privacy after being moved up just 1.5 inches...

Well worth the extra effort if I do say so myself...

...not sure if I should purchase another set of bed slats from Ikea and take the fence all the way to the ground...or if it will look fine after plants and furniture are loaded into the space...Hum, stay tuned.

  2. Yo you guys are sooo crafty...stained and everything! This is awesome.
I agree with Sing...Halfway down with plants would be nice, to cover the rest of the space. Once you put furniture in it'll be perfect.
Sorry I missed you last week, but we will be back soon to move!
