...trying to decided which movie to see tonight...date night.

...I'd like to see it, but I heard the violence, sex and poverty was pretty graphic...I'm not in the mood...

...not interested in seeing Clint Eastwood save the day...again.

...would love to see it, but I think it may hit home a little too hard for the both of us...we don't need to think about all that tonight...

...Ah, his choice...I don't have to tell you that, "I'm just not that into it"...Next!

...hum, NYC's 1990's rap scene...lived it...not interested in seeing it on the big screen...that's why I have cable.

...hum, could work, lots of sex and moral dilemma's...

...I really want to see this movie, but don't think the date is up to watching a movie about the first openly gay politician...

...I don't know why, but I'm drawn to the period, costumed movies...it will have to wait until later...not a good date night choice...

So the winner is...

...come on, what's not to like?...it takes place in a mall, Kevin James is funny as hell, and I don't have to think about anything...maybe I could actually make-out like a teenager in the back of the theater and I wouldn't miss a thing...WINNER...only problem, Mini really wants to see this movie too...oh well, that's why we have cable...

Must have...

..to me they say, "I'm cool and comfortable without even trying".

...so, this weekend I'm on the hunt for "pleather" leggings like the one's pictured above...a couple of weeks ago I almost purchased a pair in Forever21, but Mini was with me and she talked me out of them...Well Mini's with her dad this weekend and I'm going to the mall to help jump start the economy...lol.

Soul Pretty...Coat

Remember this post? The tops inspired me to make this coat...these are the pictures I promised.

...I used some old wool fabric I had hanging around...no pattern...I just designed it freestyle...the way I used to work when I was a kid...when my mom and I would make patterns from paper bags..

...the detail on the back was inspired by a trip to one of my favorite stores, Anthropologie...

...this little ruffle was a quick fix for a design problem I ran into when cutting the fabric...

...this was the problem...when draping the coat I saw that a big chuck of fabric was missing...(I probably cut a piece away for an earlier project.)...that's when I decided to add the contrasting ruffle in a different fabric...I really like the results..

Clever...

...so clever, you could find a second hand table...paint the legs black...cut it in half...and mount it to the wall like a shelf...great in a narrow space, like this entryway...

In a perfect world...

...I would be here, somewhere in Europe, wearing this dress while talking to my lover about our dinner plans...

Neighbors...

...like my artwork?

...A new couple moved into the apartment next to me about two months ago...I can hear them arguing through the walls as I type this...
her: "why did you call her?"
him: "I don't know."
her: "F you, F her...shut the F up!"
him: shutting the F up.
her: "why did you call her?"
him: shutting the F up.
her: "you better fix this."
him: "there's nothing to fix"
her: "oh yeah?! When I see that B#$%^, I'm gonna fix her and then I'm coming home to fix you.
him: shutting the F up.
Me: UGH! I am so happy not to be in a relationship right now...Peace of mind is priceless ladies.
I'm not looking forward to having them as neighbors...sigh.

Chinese New Year...year of the ox...

The Year of the Ox begins on January 26.

If you were born in one of the following years...then your an OX,
1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997
THE WORLDS MOST FAMOUS OX IS PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA

People born in the Year of the Ox are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and they anger easily. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little, when they do they are quite eloquent. Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed. They are most compatible with Snake, Rooster, and Rat people.

...I'm a dragon...if you want to learn more or to see what animal year you were born in just click here...

...I would love to take Mini down to chinatown this weekend for the huge chinese new year celebration, but after being out in the cold for the inauguration this week...I'm worn out. So we'll just order in chinese on Monday and look forward to being healthy, wealthy and wise in 2009.

Here is an example of what foods you may want to have on hand this monday to ensure a prosperous and happy year to come.

1. Tangerines and Oranges. Displaying and eating these fruits is said to bring wealth and luck. According to the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, the tradition stems from the way the Chinese words for gold and orange sound alike, while the word for tangerine echoes luck. It’s good if they have leaves, because leaves symbolize longevity. But don’t group them in fours, because, this number is associated with death.

2. Long Noodles. If noodles are served, then keep them as long as possible for long life.

3. The Tray of Togetherness. Put out for visiting relatives to snack on, or given as a gift, the eight (“a traditionally symbolic lucky number") compartments of the tray are filled with things such as preserved kumquats for prosperity, coconut for togetherness, longans to bring many sons, and red melon seeds for happiness.

4. Nian Gao. “Nian gao means year cake, but gao sounds the same as the word for tall or high,” says Dunlop. Hence the cakes symbolize achieving new heights in the coming year. The steamed sweets are made of glutinous rice flour, brown sugar, and oil. Some versions have white sesame seeds, red dates, or nuts in them (the dates are said to bring “early prosperity,” writes Gong in Good Luck Life).

5. Pomelo. This large citrus fruit is popular, it is thought to bring “continuous prosperity and status.” The tradition comes from the way the Cantonese phrase for pomelo sounds similar to the words for prosperity and status.

6. Jai. This vegetarian dish is eaten because it’s “part of the Buddhist culture to cleanse yourself with vegetables,” says Lum. It’s also packed with good-luck foods, sea moss for prosperity; lotus seeds for children/birth of sons; noodles for longevity; lily buds to “send 100 years of harmonious union”; Chinese black mushrooms to “fulfill wishes from east to west”; and more.

7. Long Leafy Greens and Long Beans. Leafy greens, such as Chinese broccoli, are “served whole to wish a long life for parents.”

8. Whole Fish. The Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for abundance, says Lum. It’s important that the fish is served with the head and tail intact, writes Gong, “to ensure a good start and finish and to avoid bad luck throughout the year.”

9. Sweets. Serving desserts brings a sweet life in the new year. A favorite is the flaky cookie pockets called gok jai, filled with peanuts, coconut, and sesame.

10. Yuanbao (Jiaozi). In North China, everyone eats the jiaozi dumplings, families will make a dough and wrap it around pork and cabbage, and boil [the dumplings], then serve them with vinegar and soy sauce. You can wrap them in the shape of an old silver ingot. During New Year celebrations jiaozi are called yuanbao, a reference to the ancient, ingot-shaped Chinese currency, and that eating them is said to bring prosperity. While making them, families sometimes tuck added good-luck foods like peanuts (to bring long life) into some of them.

Tibetian Chest...

Onto the Wish List

I was tagged last week by Kay, a twentysomething, living, dreaming and blogging in Canada...she has a very interesting post offering up 28 things to do in 2009...I'll have to think about that too...

as a part of this tag i'm supposed to reveal 6 random things about myself - so here goes:

1. I have a serious grown woman crush on the actor Terrance Howard...and he's not even physically my type...that's why I call it a grown woman crush...lol. p.s. I recently found out that my bestfriend from third grade is Terrance Howard's, brother's, sister-in-law...yep...haven't seen or spoken with her in 10 years, but you never know...I could run into her at the supermarket and be invited to a family cookout where I meet him...

2. I have to accept that I'm just a nerd...last night I watched a documentary on PBS about the design and impact of the Helvetica Font...and enjoyed it!

3. I cook three meals a day, everyday...breakfast, lunch and dinner and luv doing it...

4. I really want a pick-up truck...

5. Mini really wants a backyard and a dog...thinking about how to get it for her keeps me up at night...

6. I have never been in luv with someone when they were in luv with me and vice versa...

Yuv got style...

...the bag/lovely...the socks/too cute...the shoes/perfect...Oh, wait a minute...I think I have a black pair just like them collecting dust in my closet...UGH!

Tonight...

...the universe has shifted...I'm getting ready for a girl's night out and why do I find myself in Mini's room using her lip gloss and shimmer lotion...UGH?! Not sure what's more upsetting, having a daughter old enough to wear lip gloss or being a mom who still needs to primp with lip gloss and shimmer lotion...? I really need a cocktail!

Simplicity

I heart the simplicity of this room...no window treatments, homemade art, old mid-century furniture...What's not to luv?

Regret?

I used to have a black bathroom...and after coming across this image of a beautiful black bathroom, I'm regretting painting my room white...boo, hoo.

Free People

I heart this FREEPeople scarf so much...I had to make my own...only my camera is full of pictures and videos from Christmas and I'm too lazy to download them...will post photos soon...

Gifts...

...Mini and I received tickets to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company perform this Sunday...a gift from a friend...(I have the best friends ever)...Another friend spent 10 weeks as a midwife in Somolia this fall and while traveling through a couple of countries trying to get home she thought of me and bought back the most beautiful decorative bowl from Nairobi, Kenya (like I said, "the best friends ever") (pictures will post later). It was the best Christmas...
